DRY + SENSITIVE Top Tips to manage your eczems:

Manage your triggers

  • Learning to identify why you get a flare up and finding ways to avoid them can make a big difference
  • Common triggers could be soap, laundry products, house dust mites, animal fur, pollens, moulds, temperature and climate, man-made materials or even food and stress
  • Keep a detailed record of how your eczema responds to cutting out certain foods and reintroducing them
  • Keep your home well ventilated. A damp environment encourages mould and provides a good home for house dust mites

Laundry & Clothing

  • Put your wash through an extra rinse cycle to remove powder residue
  • Avoid fabric softener - the less residue that is left on freshly cleaned clothes the better
  • Wear comfortable clothes which won’t irritate - cotton or silk clothing keeps skin cool and allows it to breathe

Shower & Bath

  • Avoid soap and bubble bath as they dry the skin
  • Do not bathe in water that is hot as this will cause itching - warm water is better
  • Do not spend too long in the bath - 10 to 15 minutes is sufficient
  • After a bath or shower, apply your cream or body lotion just before your skin is dry, as the product will be better absorbed
  • If you are finding bathing painful, apply some cream on the places where your skin is sore before you get into the bath and then wash it off

Protect your hands

  • Wear rubber gloves whenever you wash dishes or place your hands in water. Wearing light cotton gloves under the plastic gloves can help absorb sweat and cause less irritation
  • When outside in the cold weather, choose leather or cotton gloves to protect your hands from the cold air. Woollen gloves can cause irritation
